Preparation is key

Hiking is a popular outdoor activity that provides a great escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a beginner, it’s important to prioritise safety when venturing into the great outdoors. The Swiss Alps are home to some of the world’s most stunning landscapes, but also pose a number of risks and challenges for hikers. In this blog post, we’ll discuss some key safety tips for hiking in Switzerland to help you have a fun and safe adventure.

  • Plan your hike - Know how to use maps and a compass

Before setting out on a hike, it’s important to plan your route. A great tool to use is the Swiss Federal Office of Topography’s map website, map.geo.admin.ch, which allows you to view all maps and satellite images of the Swiss Alps. Even though hiking trails in Switzerland are usually really well signposted it is still a crucial skill for hikers to know how to use a map and compass. Before setting out on a hike, make sure you have a map of the area and know how to read it. Understanding the symbols, contour lines, and topographical features can help you navigate and stay on course. A compass is also essential for navigation, as it can help you determine direction even when visibility is limited. Make sure to practice using both a map and compass before your hike to become familiar with them.

  • Check the weather forecast

It’s important to note that conditions in the mountains can change quickly, so it’s always best to check the weather forecast before you go. The Swiss Meteorological Office, meteoschweiz.admin.ch, provides up-to-date weather forecasts and alerts for the Swiss Alps. Knowing the forecast can help you prepare and pack appropriately, and can also give you an idea of what to expect during your hike. Don’t venture out if the chance of thunder storms is high. It’s never fun to be caught out in the Alps when one hits.

  • Know your limits

It’s important to know your physical limits when planning your hike. Consider the difficulty of the trail and the length. If you’re a beginner, start with a short and relatively easy hike to get a feel for the terrain and your abilities. Gradually work your way up to more challenging trails as you become more confident and comfortable.

  • Pack the right gear

Having the right gear is crucial for a safe and successful hike. A few must-haves include:

  • A backpack to carry your supplies

  • Water and snacks

  • Warm and waterproof clothing, including a hat, gloves, and a jacket

  • Hiking boots with good grip

  • A first-aid kit

  • A map and compass

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses

  • Download the REGA or EchoSOS App

  • Respect the mountain environment

The Swiss Alps are a delicate and protected environment, so it’s important to follow Leave No Trace principles when hiking. This includes staying on designated trails, avoiding trampling on vegetation, and not leaving any litter behind. It’s also important to be aware of wildlife and take precautions to avoid disturbing them.

  • Be prepared for emergencies

While the Swiss Alps are generally safe, it’s always best to be prepared for emergencies. Make sure you have a first-aid kit and know how to use it. In case of an emergency, it’s also important to have a signalling device, such as a whistle (a good hiking backpack will have that on its shoulder straps), to attract attention. Additionally, it’s important to carry a mobile phone, but keep in mind that coverage may not be available in all areas. This is why it’s important to not rely solely on REGA (Swiss Air-Rescue) to come and get you in case of an emergency. It’s always best to be self-sufficient and have a plan in place in case of an emergency.

  • Hike with a partner or group

Hiking with a partner or group can increase your safety and provide a more enjoyable experience. If you’re hiking alone, let someone know your planned route and expected return time.

In conclusion, hiking in the Swiss Alps can be an incredible experience, but it’s important to prioritize safety. By planning ahead, knowing your limits, hiking with a partner or group, packing the right gear, and being prepared for emergencies, you can have a fun and safe adventure. Remember to also respect the mountain environment, stay on trails, and know how to use maps and a compass.
